Park History

The park derives its title from a Native American legend. In the 1760s, Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa tribe, was attending a tribal council assembly. At this council of the Illinois and the Pottawatomie, an Illinois-Peoria brave stabbed Chief Pontiac. Vengeance arose in Pontiac’s followers. A really perfect fight began. The Illinois, fearing dying, took shelter at the nice rock. After many days, the remaining Illinois died of hunger giving this historical park its identify – Starved Rock.

In 1835, Daniel Hitt purchased the land this is these days occupied through Starved Rock State Park from the United States Government, as compensation for his tenure within the U.S. Army. All camp websites come whole with electrical energy. The tub space has showers and flush toilets. Aside from the scenic beauty and flourishing flora and fauna, other folks enjoy the way the park is laid out with open grassy spaces that are conducive to pitching a tent. Most tenting slots are outfitted with usual 20-amp plugins, plus a 30-amp camper hookup. A limited number have 50-amp hookups for giant go back and forth trailers.

Campground Store

Firewood Available 24/7

The campground retailer is now closed for the season. During the season, the campground store has the whole thing a camper may need: picket, ice, batteries, marshmallows and brochures and data on Starved Rock Lodge occasions. The Campground Store is positioned on the Starved Rock Campground, simply off Route 71. Picnics

Picnic areas are available to the day visitor, with tables and restroom amenities. Eight shelters are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Alcohol is prohibited January 1 through May 31 in the picnic space. Alcohol is always prohibited on the trails. Groups of 25 or more are required to touch the Visitor Center previous to arrival. Please remember that COVID-19 restrictions might follow.
