Adaptation of the Broadway musical. Magnolia Hawks is the beautiful but safe, and thus very naive, daughter of Cap'n Andy Hawks, the genial owner of a display boat that cruises the Missisippi, and his nagging wife, Parthy. She is very best friends with the show boat's superstar, Julie LaVerne, however Julie and her husband Steve are compelled to go away when it is printed that Julie has "Negro" blood in her, thereby breaking the state law by way of being married to the white Steve. Magnolia replaces Julie because the display boat's female megastar, and the display's new male big name is the artful gambler Gaylord Ravenal. "Nola" and Gaylord fall in love and marry against Parthy's needs. They and their younger daughter lead the high life when Gaylord is lucky in gambling, but are living like dust when he is unlucky. During one such unfortunate streak, a damaged Gaylord leaves Nola, and he or she is compelled to begin over through returning to the stage.
