August 19, 2009 Nice work! Couple of questions:

How did you know the bearings needed to get replaced? I'm getting some vibration while driving and it is magnified when I turn left. Was informed by means of my native mechanic I wanted one front and one rear entire hub meeting (bearings included). They wish to charge about 0 hard work for this. Wish I used to be a better backyard mechanic...lol. I need a mentor in SoCal to show me the ropes and help me spruce up my child!!

Also - what strut/coil mixture did you utilize? I have a 2002 XLT 4x4, simply went over 100K miles and need to replace mine.

Thanks once more!

The RR bearing started making a noise like I had a snow tire on that aspect. I left out it however it finally after 6 months began to in point of fact grind. I jacked up the rear and tried to transport the RR. It wobbled in every single place.

I purchased MOOG springs and Monroe shocks from Advanced Auto. The springs were 2 for the pair and the struts had been each. I then had to borrow a spring compressor to remove the previous and set up the new. I did occur to seek out that Monroe now makes a complete unit called the "Quick Strut". It's all the spring and strut meeting already assembled. All it's a must to do is set up it within the truck. That's how one can pass.

August 20, 2009

Awesome - thanks! I've seen some proceedings in regards to the quick strut for other automobiles, however confidently it really works out for the Explorer. It's just a little dearer than purchasing the two separate but seems to be so much much less trouble.

Yes it'll slide most of the long ago on after which you'll simply draw it the rest of the way on with the axle nut. Good luck.

August 21, 2009

Yes it is going to slide lots of the long ago on and then you'll be able to simply draw it the remainder of the best way on with the axle nut. Good good fortune.

August 28, 2009 Well I chickened out and had Ford substitute my front driver hub assembly (0). WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! I was getting a sexy unhealthy grinding noise, particularly when turing left. The experience is A LOT smoother now. Ford instructed me the fitting one is starting to make some noise, and the higher keep watch over arm bushing is starting to tear, so maybe I'll have the huevos to tackle those when the time comes...

FYI - thepartsbin.com is selling the Timken front wheel hub assembly for 8.

August 29, 2009 Great pics! Your submit should be a sticky..

I did my motive force facet rear bearing 3 weeks ago. I had to exchange for the reason that rear end was grabbing and pulling to 1 side. That thing was once noisy, sounded just like the when the u joints used to move out.

Did the paintings myself in my driveway, not to exhausting to do. I did have a store press the bearing for me. The outdated bearing used to be in pieces when the shop guy gave it to me. I also replaced the cv shaft as a well as a result of boot used to be toast. Darn factor used to be caught until i used a wedge between the shaft shoulder and the equipment case to loose it.

I made up our minds to do the front bearings/cv shafts at the identical time because one facet was beginning to growl. Front used to be more straightforward to do. I found more straightforward technique to get at the 3 hub meeting bolts. Once you get the wheel nut off and the brake caliper out of the best way, push the cv shaft in with the special pusher instrument to the point the place you'll get a real socket at the bolts. Then start wrenching away. Way sooner than the offset wrench. It went faster as a result of i snapped one of the most bolts. who cares, you get set of 3 with new hub assembly.....

September 14, 2009 I changed my rear bearing/hub 2 years ago on the passenger facet, the previous day I labored at the drivers side. I mangled the highest ball joint rubber boot with a tie rod separator (whoever mentioned do this gently hasn't labored on an old truck, the ones issues are caught) and tie rod end rubber boots. I cover them with substitute boots when I'm accomplished.

I may not get the hub off the use of a three armed wheel puller. I hit with hammers, pried at the back of it with the tie rod separator, broke three equipment tightening the puller. Would an impact wrench paintings to shake it unfastened?I think I'm going to have to exchange the CV joint for the reason that spindle and hub are locked together. Does this contain opening up the rear axle? I'm more than likely taking it to a shop until somebody has a certain hearth method to get the hub off - hammers, heat, and puller aren't doing it.

Thanks for the lend a hand!

September 15, 2009 I replaced my rear bearing/hub 2 years ago at the passenger side, yesterday I labored on the drivers side. I mangled the top ball joint rubber boot with a tie rod separator (whoever mentioned do that gently hasn't labored on an previous truck, those issues are caught) and tie rod finish rubber boots. I quilt them with replacement boots when I'm carried out.

I may just not get the hub off the usage of a three armed wheel puller. I hit with hammers, pried in the back of it with the tie rod separator, broke three equipment tightening the puller. Would an affect wrench work to shake it loose? I feel I'm going to have to interchange the CV joint since the spindle and hub are locked together. Does this contain opening up the rear axle? I'm almost definitely taking it to a store except someone has a certain hearth option to get the hub off - hammers, warmth, and puller aren't doing it.

Thanks for the assist!

September 15, 2009 One extra practice up query...

Excellent submit -- you almost certainly stored me hundreds of dollars in collateral injury because of heat and truly big hammers.

I'm going to tug my hubs and spindles to exchange the rear differential seals. No harm yet, just leaking. My query is should I change those bearings whilst I have the hubs off? Or simply antiseize the whole thing up real well so the spindle comes off easier when the bearings after all go bad? Also, can any individual direct me to the BEST publish on changing those differential seals.

I've got 90k on a 2002 XLT 4X4.
